It is estimated that rainforests are being deforested at the rate of 100 trees per minute. Deforestation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, flooding, etc. Palmarejo recognizes the significant impact of deforestation; therefore, they organized a community-wide campaign to promote environmental awareness.
The campaign consisted of community education and native tree distribution for planting. Four local communities, Palmarejo, Chinipas, Los Llanos and Termoris, were involved in the campaign. Participants were given trees native to the area to be planted near their community to help counter the effects of deforestation. Over 1,000 trees were distributed at the event.
In the past Palmarejo’s reforestation efforts have remained internal, but this year they decided to include the surrounding communities to help educate the public on the importance of sustainability and environmental awareness. The campaign was a huge hit among the community members in attendance.
“By everyone working together to plant these native trees we will help improve the environment and the communities where we live and work,” says Fàtima Castrejon, Social Responsibility Manager at Palmarejo.
This reforestation campaign by Palmarejo is one example of Coeur’s prominent Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) efforts. Coeur believes in protecting the environment through responsible stewardship and proactive efforts. For more information about Coeur’s stance on ESG, visit our Responsibility page on our website.
