Coeur Rochester Wins Top Honors

September 18, 2017

Author: Kirstie Bakke

On September 9, 2017, miners from across Nevada donned their best and gathered for the annual Nevada Mining Association’s Convention. The convention ended with a heart-felt awards ceremony, honoring the mines and individuals that excelled in safety during 2016.

Coeur Rochester’s triple zero record, zero fatalities, zero lost-time injuries, and zero reportable accidents in 2016, earned them First Place in the medium size surface metal operations category. Coeur Rochester also had three standout employees that received individual NMA Safety Champion awards. Jesse Madrid, Annette Schumacher, and Loren Cooney were named Safety Champions for their dedication and commitment to fostering safety in the workplace throughout 2016.

I asked Rich Wagner, Health & Safety Manager at Rochester, what these awards mean to his team and he had this to say, “Winning these awards means that our employees understand the true value of the words ‘safe work.’ It demonstrates that they see and understand what real hazards and risks look like, and work diligently to mitigate these risks through the hierarchy of safety controls.”

Wagner believes that this award is another confirmation that Rochester’s health and safety culture is continuously improving. As a subsidiary of Coeur Mining, Coeur Rochester strives to pursue a higher standard every single day.

“Pursuing a higher standard takes consistent effort every minute of every day all year long,” says Wagner. “The ultimate goal of our employees and this organization is to go home to our friends and family unharmed and feeling accomplished with a day’s work.”

With 2017 well under way, Rochester’s safety record is off to a promising start. Wagner states that his team is dedicated to safety and looks forward to replicating the same safety results for 2017 and beyond.
