Award Recognition for our Safety Culture at Rochester

September 28, 2015

by Rich Wagner, Safety Manager, Coeur Rochester - When we talk about building a safety culture at Coeur Rochester, we know that it is not just a process of establishing a sound framework for safety and then assuming it will be followed. Building a culture around something like safety requires instilling a commitment to achieving continual improvement throughout the organization. We have to ask ourselves more than: "Are we following the framework or policies in place and did we do a good job?" We need to ask: "How could we do it better? How can we improve our safety practices even more?" Engaging in a true safety culture touches everything we do—from our day-to-day tasks to implementing new technologies to our management's focus and every other aspect of our work. We know that being open to new ideas and new ways of doing things as part of a disciplined approach is the best way to ensure that workforce risks are reduced. Doing so requires moving beyond what might be called "old school roadblocks" that can stand in the way of safety innovation.
