Mining Life-Cycle Stewardship
Coeur is committed to environmental excellence in all mining activities,
from initial exploration to final restoration. We strive to ensure
environmental monitoring, employee and public safety, and community
involvement at every stage of the mining life cycle.
Life-cycle stewardship requires careful planning and implementation,
and must be incorporated into the earliest stages of mine exploration,
construction, operation, closure and rehabilitation. Prompt restoration
of lands affected by mining ensures that they are restored to other
productive uses as quickly and completely as possible.

The Life-Cycle Approach at Other Sites
The life-cycle approach is followed at Coeur's operations. Some
highlights are listed below:
- Over
the last three years we have invested over $23 million in environmental
management and site rehabilitation.
- 225
acres have been reclaimed concurrently with mine operations at
the Rochester mine (18 percent of total disturbed area) and 95
acres have been released from rehabilitation financial assurance
requirements.
- More
than 5,000 plants are being cultivated for future revegetation
efforts at an on-site nursery at the Fachinal mine in Chile.
- Innovative
biological technology is being tested for heap neutralization
and closure at the Rochester mine.
- As
a result of natural conditions returning at the mine site, a water
discharge permit is no longer required.
- Gain
sharing at the Rochester mine reduced operating costs by approximately
$0.23 per ounce over the past 4 1/2 years, saving approximately
$16 million and paying over $4.2 million to employees for reaching
agreed-upon goals. These goals included meeting environmental,
health and safety, and performance as standards.
