PARTNERING
WITH COMMUNITIES
Supporting the Community
Coeur's support of local projects and organizations in the communities
in which we operate, builds important relationships and improves
the quality of life in these communities.
Each
year, employees at our Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, headquarters trade
their high heels and dress loafers for hiking boots and shovels.
They work alongside members of the Audubon Society, the Idaho Youth
Ranch and the general public, to improve Lake Coeur d'Alene's Cougar
Bay Preserve.
In
2000 over 2,700 native trees and shrubs were planted around the
Preserve during a community workday sponsored by The Nature Conservancy
and Coeur. Over 18 species were planted to improve bird habitat
and provide erosion control. "The Cougar Bay project teaches
people good land stewardship skills and generates conservation awareness,"
says K.J. Hackworthy, field representative for The Nature Conservancy
of North Idaho.
Through
community partnerships such as the Cougar Bay Preserve project,
habitat is restored and protected, and citizen relationships grow,
benefiting the Coeur d'Alene community.
Around
the world, Coeur employees continue to find ways to participate
in the community as individuals or as part of company-sponsored
initiatives.
For
more examples see below:
*
Bolivia: Near our San Bartolome project, local
mining cooperatives employ hundreds of local artisan miners. Coeur
is developing business alliances with these local miners, designing
a development plan that is inclusive and attentive to the local
traditions and people. This includes innovative development agreements
for ore processing and local hiring preferences.
*
Nevada: The Coeur Rochester mine is in the backyard
of two western communities: Lovelock and Winnemucca. Employees here
volunteer for a variety of charitable and community activities,
bringing a helping hand and leadership skills to many worthwhile
projects. Serving on local volunteer fire departments, school boards
or with the Toys for Tots program, our Rochester employees give
their personal time and their considerable skills to charitable
and civic organizations.
*
Alaska: The Kensington project is recognized by
the communities of Juneau and Haines for its consensus-building
approach to environmental permit-ting and project design. Our Kensington
staff has worked closely with local environmental interest groups,
tribal corporations and the fishing community to address project
changes, design features, environmental mitigation, reclamation
principles and monitoring.
*
Chile: Coeur operates the Cerro Bayo mine, near
the town of Chile Chico. We assist the community by supporting a
variety of activities, including local folklore, art, literature,
drug awareness and sports programs. Coeur has also improved local
services by providing financial support for school building and
road improvements, and computer equipment for area fire, police
and hospitals.
